Description

In this economy it's all about local, and Portland has developed a beautifully creative and bountiful food and drink ecosystem. This book is the indispensable access guide to it all. Portland, the little foodie town that could, is quickly becoming the national capital for all things edible and artisan. For cooks, tourists, people who love to eat, localtarians, wine lovers, cheese freaks, Parisian ex-pats in search of a decent baguette, cocktail hounds on a 100-mile diet — this is the guide to the goods. Portland is all about the producers and purveyors — the folks who create, produce, bake, distill, gather, and sell the things that make good eating and drinking possible. Essays range from pickling to following a forager. Whether you've lived in Portland your entire life, are visiting for business or pleasure, or are a hungry transplant — this book helps you find all that is delicious in Portland.

Summary: "A Guide to Portland Restaurants Frequented by Tourists Not Locals"

It is always interesting to read a guide to local eating for any city when it is written for tourists: will the author write about local eateries enjoyed by locals or focus on the tourist district with emphasis on places frequented by out-of-town people?

Whether Liz Crain is originally a Portland native or a hipster transplant is unknown, however her focus is unfortunately on places for tourists to eat that aren't typically frequented by locals. Dozens of Portland culinary institutions are completely ignored in this book preferring instead to focus on nouveau houte cuisine.

If you're a native Portlander, then you will likely not be pleased with this book; however, if you're an out-of-town guest looking for the latest shtick to fill your belly without the bother of asking locals where they'd suggest you dine, then you'll be happy with the book.

Summary: "An informative and fun read."

Wow, there's so much I never knew! Not just a great book to pick up when you can't decide where to go, or what to eat -- You get to learn about the people that make your food! A great book for locals, as well as a excellent book to give friends visiting from out of town. Thankfully, Liz steers clear of abusing local cliches', and buzzwords that can make books like these a painful read for locals.
